How to give a killer presentation

Giving presentations is hard. Many of us are extremely uncomfortable speaking in front of an audience. It takes practice and skill. Here are some helpful tips. Excerpts from: https://hbr.org/2013/06/how-to-give-a-killer-presentation

Frame your story
We all know that humans are wired to listen to stories, and metaphors abound for the narrative structures that work best to engage people. When I think about compelling presentations, I think about taking an audience on a journey. A successful talk is a little miracle—people see the world differently afterward.

Plan Your Delivery
There are three main ways to deliver a talk. You can read it directly off a script or a teleprompter. You can develop a set of bullet points that map out what you’re going to say in each section rather than scripting the whole thing word for word. Or you can memorize your talk, which entails rehearsing it to the point where you internalize every word—verbatim.

Develop Stage Presence
The biggest mistake we see in early rehearsals is that people move their bodies too much. They sway from side to side, or shift their weight from one leg to the other. People do this naturally when they’re nervous, but it’s distracting and makes the speaker seem weak. Simply getting a person to keep his or her lower body motionless can dramatically improve stage presence.

Plan the Multimedia
Keep it simple; don’t use a slide deck as a substitute for notes (by, say, listing the bullet points you’ll discuss—those are best put on note cards); and don’t repeat out loud words that are on the slide. Not only is reciting slides a variation of the teleprompter problem—“Oh, no, she’s reading to us, too!”—but information is interesting only once, and hearing and seeing the same words feels repetitive.

From the video we watched in class write a short paragraph (3-5 sentences) critique about Greta's presentation. How did he follow the strategies identified above?

  1. Greta didn't have that much of stage presence and stayed inside the red rug her whole presentation. She sounded a little nervous at first but she didn't show it in her face, just in her body actions.Greta definitely followed the strategies above, she talked about her story, then her delivery, presence, and multimedia. She had many cites meaning she knew that something was decreasing or increasing. At the end, her face showed sadness and a little anger to express her story and try to make a change with her story.

  2. She had a good presentation because framed her story and gave figures. She had figures on how much emission we use and how many animals are going extinct. She said there were 200 animals going extinct and 1,00 to 10,000 emissions being used. She also had a multimedia she had her speech memorized. Moreover, she gave a great speech because she framed her story and planned her delivery.

  3. She definitely knew her information and seemed passionate of her subject. She did stutter and stayed in one area throughout the presentation. She seemed a little nervous. She shared her story but needs to work on stage presence and planning her delivery was pretty good. She was very strong in her multimedia with getting to the point.

  6. Greta was incredible, she knew what she was talking about, she got straight to the point.
She also kept her audience in focus and made them interact by making little jokes here and there. She stood her ground in choosing a subject that she strongly believes in. She stood in one spot and was wailing her arms around, she wanted you to be focused on what she had to say, not what her body parts are doing. She wasn't reading off any flash cards. For her age she knew a lot about what she was talking about and how she wanted to address it.

  7. Greta had a professional presentation she spoke about the cause and effects on global warming. she explained very clearly about how to help the situation and what has been done or tried to be done to stop this situation. However her physical appearance seemed as if she was very nervous to move around. she stayed in the red circle that was on the floor therefore she did make eye contact and looked around to all the people in the crowed. Overall i give greta an applause because for her age she know exactly what is happening with global warming and knew how to explain its issues in front of thousands of people.

  8. Greta was very professional and straight forward at giving her presentation about global warming. She included the important facts that was needed to tell and the causes and effects. Greta was great at speaking because she spoke clearly and slowly so that the audience was be able to hear all her words. She was good at engaging with the audience by telling a few jokes. Greta did such an amazing job that most kids can't do because they either get nervous, not prepare, or stuttered a lot.

  9. Greta was excellent that way she expressed how she felt was unspeakable. To have that much confidence to talk to a crowd over 100 people is inspiring. The way she communicates with her audience made me think that she's a focus and an independent person. Greta is an incredible person, hearing about her past and what she went through was horrible, yet overcoming her fear was a big thing for her. She's an inspiration for young ones and adults.

She seemed a little nervous at first, but once she got into it, she felt comfortable and her stuttering ceased. She was passionate on her subject which also helped her feel more confident in her speech.

  11. Greta was not scared to present in front of many people. she did not read from any slides or index cards so she knows her information. She included important facts in her present tachyon and she didn't walk to much on the stage. At first she looked nervous but when she continued talking she felt confident about her present tachyon. She inspired many people.

  12. Greta's presentation was very professional and informative. As she introduced her topic she seemed a little nervous, but she slowly begins to get comfortable with her crowd. She gave a good informational introduction to her topic and brief description as to what she'll be talking about. Her body language could've been better and more welcoming. Overall, Greta gave a nice non repetitive presentation.

  13. I think Greta's presentation was informative, professional all while being entertaining. I think this is very good especially for someone her age, who give a presentation like a person from a big company such as, Apple. Greta made her speech orally, which allowed her audience to feel like she was having a conversation with them. She made jokes thought her presentation that made it both, interesting and funny. Overall her presentation allowed you to be able to get a deep lasting message about Global warming, while still keeping you interested for more.
