Adolescence and Technology
We discussed in class the importance of non-verbal cues and looked at the impact adolescence has on learning development (see below). We also talked about how technology can negatively impact social development because our focus is removed from everything else.
So for our blog post using the above chart, pick one element of development under Early or Middle Adolescence and make an argument for or against using a phone in school. Then go online and find an article that supports or negates your position and give us a brief summary of what the article states.
For example: During Early Adolescence as my intellectual interests expand I need a phone to engage more with what I'm interested in studying. The article I found talks about how 75% of students using cell phones in class are performing worse than those without. https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2016/04/do-smartphones-have-a-place-in-the-classroom/480231/
Do not copy my example.
For Middle Adolescence I learned that teens have a lot of abstract thought, interest in moral reasoning, and generally think a lot. I also learned that teens like to be entertained and enjoy taking risks. I think if they were to have a cell phone in class, since they do a lot of thinking they would not be interested in the lesson or the class and more interested in the things that they are thinking about or looking at on their cell phones. They would also want to be on their cell phones because they enjoy taking risks, and cell phones are not allowed in class. So while cell phones can be helpful for getting quick answers, I think the middle adolescence would be too distracted and do other things besides going to a website the teacher recommended or whatever else they're supposed to be doing.
ReplyDeleteGood Olivia. Part of the assignment was to find a source that either supports or negates your opinions. Use facts to support your arguments in the future and cite the source.
DeleteDuring my Early Adolescence as a 13 year old I used technology as a way to stay in connect with my friends and family along with using it to help me with my studies. I believe that it depends on the child that is in early adolescence because most children are mature enough to use technology in a way that it can help them with their studies, There are multiple pros and cons of teen in the stage of early adolescence using technology. This is an article that i found that explains the in between of teens using technology and how it affects others around them. https://childdevelopmentinfo.com/parenting/pros-cons-giving-mobile-phone-teenager/#.W7zytbxKi00
ReplyDeleteGreat point Talia. We all learn differently and it is important to take that into consideration. Your source was good and mostly looked at the issued from a professional point of view. A lot of good insight since the author is licensed in the field of learning and adolescence.
DeleteIn Middle Adolescence, puberty is completed, people are thinking about the meaning of life, but technology will ruined them. When I had my phone, I was 12 and I used it for a way to contact family, friends, and a way to help me find the words I need to know and answer my questions. 14-18 year olds (mostly) everyone have phone and be taking pictures and texting and etc. But technology can make you lazy and can affect your health. People can also be playing video games and not be active. When some people do that, it will make them very sensitive because they are not use to the sun. Also it can affect your eyes. If the middle adolescence have their phones out, they would be pretty distracted because they would be wanting to take pictures and play games. Even though their cell phones are very helpful, they would be not doing their work and they would be doing something very different then what they should be doing. The article im putting up is about technology addiction works and how people can be unhealthy about it: https://www.hazeldenbettyford.org/articles/fcd/teen-technology-addiction
ReplyDeleteGood points Brianna. Addiction is a very serious issue as young people navigate adolescence. Bad habits start young. Great source.
DeleteFor early adolescence girls and boys start to go through puberty such as growth and development. Another stage for early adolescences is deeper thinking which is under the category for cognitive development. The third stage category describes social emotional development for 11-13 years of age. Many children around 11 to 13 years old have some sort of technology, whether its a phone,iPad,or computer. Their are many negatives and positives about technology. A negative side of technology is that many children are on their phones when they are not supposed to. A positive side about technology is that you can communicate to your friends and family. I feel that technology shouldn't be used in the early adolescences children because they are too young and will take technology and the internet for granted. I was 13 years old when i first revived a phone however i used technology to stay in touch with my friends and family by text, call, and face-time. I have found two articles that support my answer about not giving children at the age of 11-13 technology. https://www.publicsource.org/technologys-harmful-effects-on-children/ http://mediasmarts.ca/tipsheet/internet-safety-tips-age-11-13
ReplyDeleteExcellent Andriana. As you mature through adolescence your capable of handling more responsibility. Good sources. This quote: "The American Academy of Pediatrics only recommends a maximum of two hours per day for teenagers and older children." Wow.
DeleteWhen boys or girls reach about the age of thirteen you are in the early adolescence stage. This is when your body begins to change weather it is the difference in your growth or in your voice weather it gets lower or higher. This process is called puberty, this will change you as a pre-adult. In our bodies we go through different stages during this time in life. Our personalities can change, you want more freedom from your parents and all of that stuff. The reason why it's important to have a phone during this age is because when we need to talk someone about our change you would need to text or call that person. That person can give you advice on what to expect during this time and tell you what they have been through during this time in the early stage of adolescence. When there is an emergency and no one is there to help, it's always good to have a phone with you at all time even at this age. https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/teen/Pages/Stages-of-Adolescence.aspx
ReplyDeleteI agree that safety is an important priority for schools. However, your source did not discuss the impact technology can have on adolescence. Be sure to support your arguments with facts and cite the source.
DeleteDuring my early adolescence, I used technology in a mature matter. I used it to stay in contact with friends through social media, e-mail, texting, and calling/face time. In my personal experience my family lives far away so I depended on technology to help me get in touch with them. Children during early adolescence are going through puberty and struggle with self identity. They start to think that they need to become someone else and they start to compare themselves to others and feel insecure. Sometimes they feel they don't fit in to the idea of being "Perfect" and sometimes it can lead to self harm or feeling bad about themselves. It is extremely important for people to have a phone during this time to get in touch with people to talk about these certain things. When kids think about self harm or feel uncomfortable with themselves they can use their phone to talk to the people they care most about and who are most close to them so that they can explain their thoughts and be able to do that with a close friend or family member they trust. This is an article that talks about the stages of adolescence and it's affects including physical development. https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/teen/Pages/Stages-of-Adolescence.aspx
ReplyDeleteGreat points Eliana. Studies do show that access to social media during adolescence can have a negative impact on a young persons self esteem , etc. Your source did not discuss the impact technology can have on adolescence. Be sure to use facts to support your opinions and cite the sources.
DeleteDuring the time of my early adolescence I use technology a lot in my life. If it wasn't for technology, my life would be so different. Technology helps everyone today even adults. Technology is an easy go to app that anyone can go to. Many people in the world rely and count on technology to be there for them. I think it's best for kids in middle adolescence from ages to 14-18 to use phones in school. Teens in the ages of 14-18 they are entering high school or already in high school. Them having their phones in school allows them to search up and do more research on their studies of what they want to be or do when they get older. It gives teens the information they need to succeed in life. Teens using their phones in school make them learn in a way that they are comfortable. Their phones allows them the quick easy access to the internet to get the answers they need fast. Teens using phones in school allows them so much access that can help them so much now and in the future as our technology develops even more. This article supports my argument on why phones should be used in school. https://education.cu-portland.edu/blog/classroom-resources/should-students-use-their-smartphones-as-learning-tools/
ReplyDeleteExcellent argument Isabella. Great source to back it up. You make some valid points that maybe we're missing a teachable moment.
DeleteDuring my Early adolescence (13) I used by phone all the time. I used it to keep in contact with my family and friends. I also would go on social media to keep myself updated. I think that students should be able to have their phones in school in case of emergencies and as long as they are using it appropriately. Another reason why students should be allowed to have their phones in school because it teaches us responsibility by making it our job not to use it in class or it gets taken away. Lastly, it prepares us students for real-world jobs because in a real job your boss would not take your phone away. They would expect you not to be on your phone 24/7 but they would probably make an exception if there was an emergency.
ReplyDeleteGood points Cydney. Use facts to support your arguments in the future and cite the sources.
DeleteDuring my early adolescence I would always use technology to stay updated with everything, that includes social media, help with school papers, and most importantly: staying in touch with my family and I still do that. I would always call and text my family members seeing how they're doing and if anything is happening with the family. I think that students SHOULD be able to have their phones in school in case a family emergency happens, think about it, if something happens to a member in your family, you're the only one who needs to know that, we shouldn't have to call the school telling them what's happening in our personal lives. I understand that teachers think that phones are distracting but they have to see it from our perspective, we live in a society where we rely on technology to get us through our day. 90% of students who get to use phones in school use it for school related things not just bullying or things along that line. https://www.teachermagazine.com.au/articles/mobile-phones-in-the-classroom-what-does-the-research-say
ReplyDeleteGreat job Taina. Really interesting argument and your source is excellent. Warrants a further discussion.
DeleteDuring my early adolescence i have changed in several ways. One way i have changed was because I began to use technology more. When i was younger i would use my tablet a few times out of the day, in contrast now I go on my phone 24\7. I go on my phone more to be updated about my friends and whats going on in their lives. I also use social media more than I did when i was in elementary school. Not only have I changed because I use my phone more but I have changed personality wise too. Not that I struggle with who i think i am but i am less hyper than i was before. I believe in schools we should be able to use our phones but only to a certain extent though. most kids would take using phones in school for granted, but if the teachers teach us to control our use there wont be a issue. This would reduce the obsessive use of technology for teens which is good. Technology is the center of the whole today and restricting it during the school day is a bad idea. We need to use phones in school for emergency reasons too.
ReplyDeleteGood reflection Kayla. Be sure to support your opinions with facts in the future and cite the sources.
DeleteTeens often times visit sites that are not appropriate for a school setting. The biggest risk when allowing teens to have phones in school is given access to social media. With access to social media teens aren't always responsible. Some example of this is, The Ice Bucket Challenge, The Fire Challenge, or The Soap Eating Challenge. Behavior like this often times interferes with learning as teens are focus more on their social media profile then school and schoolwork. To protect teens and increase their academic growth at school, phones should never be allowed especially in class. The site where i got my information is called https://www.teensafe.com/blog/why-are-social-media-challenges-popular-teens/.
ReplyDeleteDuring Early adolescence technology is a crucial part of my everyday life i use it to check the weather in the mornings , to stay in contact with my family , to check my homework and etc. I believe that phones should be allowed in school . One reason is for contacting parents i understand that we have office phones but sometimes the conversation may be private and you dont want everyone in the office to hear so you should be able to go somewhere private to use your phone and contact whoever you need. Also if an abrupt emergency like a lockdown or fire happens you should be able to send a quick message to your parents so that they could know whats going on and possibly help. Another reason why phones should be allowed in schools is because you can use it as a reminder. Your phone can send you a quick alert during the school day to start or finish an assignment which can be really helpful to keep up your grades. the site that supports my information is https://www.useoftechnology.com/cell-phones-allowed-in-school/
ReplyDeleteDuring my adolescence, I've realized that I've always used technology. As teenagers, we tend to use social media, to keep in contact with friends or family, while some teenagers take social media for granted. Some schools believe that we shouldn't have phones with us, but I think we should because if there is an emergency, and your parent is trying to get in contact with you how would they know that you're all right?
ReplyDeleteFor early adolescence both genders start to go through puberty and change physically and socially. When I went through my adolescence technology has always been there through the changes. When you go through these changes it can be very hard for most kids, and talking with adults, friends and loved ones can help you get through it. Technology helps that happen. Although, if a younger child starts off using technology at a young age, they can mistreat the way they use it and take it for granted. They can become easily addicted and grow up with only knowing how to socialize through devices. https://medium.com/thrive-global/will-technology-ruin-your-childrens-development-663351c76974
ReplyDeleteFor middle adolescence, technology is a big part of our lives. We live on the internet and social media. Although we use our cellphones for research, reading and etc. its still a big distraction. As we're moving on to our late adolescence we are shaping our lives and future. Which means we need to focus on the important aspects of life such as education. For teens technology is very time consuming. We spend most of our time snap-chatting our friends than studying. Teens need break from technology once in a while to balance our their time and health. http://www.pewinternet.org/2018/05/31/teens-social-media-technology-2018/
